One of the great things about The United Methodist Church is our open communion table. First, you may be wondering about communion. Communion is one of two sacraments in The United Methodist Church, the other being baptism. Sacraments in general can be kind of tricky to talk and write about. So maybe that's better left for a discussion among learners. So then we shift our focus to open. Having an open communion table means no one is turned away. We believe that the grace of God can work in any person's life and therefore, we do not prohibit folks from participating in communion in hopes that it will be a means of grace for all persons. We consider the communion table to be the 'Lord's Table', which means Jesus is the host. This gives us the theological 'undergirding' to Share the Table through the church's feeding programs. We extend the Lord's Table when we feed our neighbors. In this sense, feeding programs are in themselves a means of grace by assisting with basic human needs. Our feeding programs operate through partners like Clay County Clothes Closet and Food Pantry, Ridgeview Elementary and Doctors Inlet Elementary Schools, Citgo gas station (our neighbors on College Drive) and others. While the program may shift over time, and while partnerships come and go, feeding people is an essential extension of the ministry of Jesus Christ through Asbury United Methodist Church. We feed our neighbors.Â
